Since it's been the better part of a year since I've demonstrated anywhere
on the site that I'm actually still aware of its existence, I thought it
as good an idea as any to celebrate Mexico's defeat of France in defense of
its independence (along with Thairen's birthday, even if I only hear from
the guy once every three months or so these days) with a bit of an update.
At the moment, I'm fairly deeply immersed in the grad school/CfMC lifestyle, which surely qualifies as some form of insanity. Even having backed off on the coursework a bit this year, the combination of being reponsible for imparting wisdom to UCLA students (20th Century U.S. History Fall Quarter, 19th Centuyry U.S. History in Winter, and back to the 20th Century for Spring), working with the groovy new WebSurvent code we have these days, and trying to fulfill my own academic responsibilities has kept me reasonably busy...and serves as my ongoing excuse for anyone wondering about my lack of alacrity in communicating with the rest of the world. Apologies to anyone who's tried to keep in contact with me recently for that. Beyond that, there's very little to report from my personal life. Since Allison's time out here last summer, we haven't had coordinating schedules, which has kept me at home amassing vacation time I'm hoping to use at some point. Domestic life has remained entertaining, if not particularly exceptional (periodic trips to the Westwood Brewing Company and such seem a little mundane to chronicle at length). My Lakers look primed to make a good run of it this year and even their arena-mates, the Kings have been fun to watch recently, with easily the most impressive season (post-season, at least) since Gretzky left. On the other side of the pond, Liverpool is in the middle of a hell of a season, giving Tristan and I something something to alternately confuse and annoy the hell out of our fellow grad students with. Since I haven't done anything with the site in ages, I thought maybe I'd point out something else that's fairly new. My former bandmates have been out and doing things with themselves, and are, by all accounts (except my own...I haven't actually seen them yet) sounding great. Rowland has put together a site for the band, who've rechristened themselves Stone Blue (no, they're not a Foghat tribute band), that's worth checking out. Especially with me doing distressingly little in this medium these days. |
