Whu' happened?
After five-plus years of the messy mid-90s layout, I decided to spruce the site up a little. I know it's not any great aesthetic statement, but, at minimum, the new layout should be a little cleaner than the old. I finally reached a point where the retro look of the site ceased being cute and started being a little embarassing. Beyond that, a couple of you noted (evidence that I do pay attention to feedback) that it was a bit taxing to be reading the denser of my writings in a white-on-ugly-background format. The site is meant to be fairly minimalist, anyhow (I'm thinking here of the initial conceptualization of the site, which Trond called "the one with all the words" on FC, lo these many years ago), and, I think, is reasonably navigable. The code behind the site isn't exactly cutting edge stuff; it's clunky table code that I probably should have done in one of two or three other, more efficient, ways, but it seems to degrade fairly well in the assorted versions of Netscape, IE, Mozilla, and Opera I've got sitting around. If you catch something that doesn't look right, let me know; it's likely that in among the dozens and dozens of pages on the site are a couple of clunkers, particularly if you're running some browser I'm not. The content has only a couple of minor changes and additions at this point, but will have several more coming over the next week or two. I'm hoping, in some respects, that this opens up a new phase for the site, where, rather than letting it sit for more than a year, that I'll at least slot in some low-impact content to keep things a little fresh. I don't know that I'll be committing huge amounts of time to the site, but, at a guess, I'd suspect the immediate future will keep the site rolling along a little more interestingly than the immediate past. |
